چکیده

change in the relative incidence of meningococcal and influenzal infections during the period of the survey. Presenting symptoms and signs are discussed, and the frequency of the combination of fever, irritability, and vomiting is noted. The high incidence of fits is stressed. Cerebrospinal fluid abnormalities are discussed. A basic plan of treatment has been evolved, with modifications according to the bacteriological findings. All of these points are considered separately for neonatal meningitis and the diagnostic difficulties are discussed. We would like to acknowledge the contribution of the medical and nursing staffs of Sunderland Children's Hospital and the Havelock Infectious Diseases Hospital, Sunderland, in the care of these cases. We thank Mrs. B. D. Eldridge for secretarial assistance.

Cortisol Levels in Protein-calorie Malnutrition

The two clinical syndromes of protein-calorie malnutrition-kwashiorkor and marasmus, have been widely studied. Striking differences have been observed between kwashiorkor and marasmus, both with respect to the clinical picture and the biochemical profile. One such difference is the exaggerated hyperglycaemic response of the marasmic infant to epinephrine in contrast to the poor response of the ...

Adrenal cortex in marasmic children.

The effect of malnutrition on the adrenal cortex has not been well studied. Earlier reports suggested that malnutrition in man produced adrenocortical hypofunction (Zubiratn and Gomez-Mont, 1953), and more recent reports suggest normal function (Lurie and Jackson, 1962) and possibly hyperfunction of the adrenal cortex in malnourished infants (Alleyne and Young, 1966). The purpose of this study ...

Nonfunctional Adrenocortical Carcinoma with Foci of Osseous Metaplasia in a Young Girl

Nonfunctional adrenocortical carcinoma is an extremely rare malignant tumor in children. Unlike the functional tumor which is detected early due to its hormonal presentation, nonfunctional tumor is detected at a later stage. Here we report a case of a 10 year old girl who presented with abdominal mass and symptoms of short duration. No hypertension and cushingoid features were seen. Serum alpha...

Effects of nutritional restrictions during post-hatching development on adrenocortical function in western scrub-jays (Aphelocoma californica).

Altricial birds grow rapidly during post-hatching period and are developmentally sensitive to variations in food supply. Limited food results in elevated corticosterone levels in chicks of semi-precocial birds but it is not clear whether altricial songbirds show similar adrenocortical stress response to nutritional restrictions during early development. It is also unknown how nutritional stress...
